How many maps and GPS' does it take to get to the surface parking lot outside the Sears Tower? The answer...at least one confused GPS, one laptop with Google Maps and 2 adults who amazingly laughed at the silly situation. When we got down close to the maze of streets around the Sears Tower the GPS freaked out and started shouting crazy commands at us. It took a couple of trips around the block and through a tunnel but we made it to the parking lot after we turned on the laptop and pulled up a map. We finally got there around 7pm. Someone in a big truck was leaving the parking lot and gave us his parking permit so we didn't have to pay for parking.
The kids really liked the short movie before we went up. It gave the history of the Tower. The elevator takes 1 minute to go up 99 floors. They were doing maintenance on the 103rd floor so we only got to the 99th floor. It was an amazing view. We were there just at sunset so we were there at a really good time. Zach has talked about the tower for over a year so it was good he finally got to see it. He of course asked when we could go to Dubai and see the tallest tower in the world.
We left around 8 and started looking for the way out of the Chicago downtown maze. I distracted Tom talking about a hotel so we had one U-turn after somehow getting onto 94 instead of 90. We finally made it to a Days Inn in Portage Indiana. It conveniently has a Dennys next door so we had a carryout snack from there.
Tomorrow should be a decent day. Only 600 miles to get home. There aren't any planned stops yet. We haven't decided if we'll drive straight through or break it up with a side trip somewh
